Barcelona - Parc Guell

Barcelona – Parc Guell

Barcelona is one of my favourite cities in Europe. It has real vitality with many galleries and tourist attractions, Barcelona has it all.

Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, an self governing area in the south east of Spain.

The city sits right on the Mediterranean coastline and the population is just under 5 million within the Provence of Barcelona.

At one time, Barcelona was a Roman military camp.

Throughout history, the Moors, Visigoths as well as other different powers have conquered it.                            As you would expect all of them have actually left imprints on the city,                                                        which gives it a particular diverse ambience.

Spending time in Barcelona will make you fall in love with Ciutat Vella, the old city.

Ciutat Vella lies at the heart of Barcelona and keeps several of the Roman architectural structures and walls.    It really feels like you are stepping back in time as you stroll around the streets taking in the atmosphere.

Las Ramblas is the main road running from the centre of the city to the harbour.                                                Make time to wander up and down the full length of it.

The boulevard is a diverse gathering of unusual small booths, an impressive opera house                                  and is a great location to people watch.

When day turns to evening, you can dance the night away in any number of different little bars and clubs.

Shopping

Barcelona has lots of shopping opportunities. The major location is a retail area that is 5 kilometres long, beginning at Las Ramblas.
You should certainly find all you want along that road especially if you are into designer clothes.

If you like shopping centres better then head right into El Corte Ingles.                                                            This is a huge department store found on Placa de Catalunya.

Eating & Drinking

Barcelona is well-known for its night life and social events.                                                                                Las Ramblas is again the area you need to be going to.                                                                                        It is a late night city where the main bars are generally quiet until around midnight                                      when the city starts to liven up.
One of the most popular meals served in restaurants is Paella and Rioja is the delicious unique regional wine.

City Tourist Attractions

When you are in Barcelona you should definately go to the Port Vell Marina complex at the waterfront.

Then stand under the statue of Columbus as well as stroll up the world famous road of Las Ramblas.

Right here you will find yourself in the centre of the cities cultural area amongst artists, street buskers and also numerous charming restaurants and coffee shops.

Don’t forget to try and visit the Basilica de la Santa Creu and the grand Placa de Catalunya.

The Salvadore Dali Museum and the Joan Miro Exhibition are well worth a visit.

If architecture is your thing, Barcelona is a treasure. Antoni Guadi lived and also worked in Barcelona.

Guadi is recognized for his drip like architectural style, which has to be seen be believed.                                His legacy can best be discovered in the Sagrada Familia, the church he was unable to                            complete prior to his death. Started in 1882, construction continues even now.

The Casa Batllo and also Casa Mila are 2 other Guadi creations worth a visit, yet any one of his structures will make your jaw drop.

For museums, Barcelona has a diverse collection.

The Fundacio Joan Miro has early works from Pablo Picasso.

The National Museum of Art of Catalonia has huge sections of older structures in the city that were moved before demolition. A city within a museum, if you will.

Following the eclectic theme of Barcelona, the museums open as well as close at really strange times. There appears to be no rhyme or reason, so make sure you find out before visiting one.

Barcelona Football Stadium

Barcelona Football Stadium

Barcelona has one of the leading football clubs in Europe and with a passionate following.

FC Barcelona is a religious institution to itself.

If you are in Barcelona during the football season, try and go to a game.                                                          The crowd boils with passion, however there is rarely any violence.                                                              Whether you are a football follower or not you will be swept in the atmosphere.

If you are planning a trip to Europe, you will certainly find it tough to beat Barcelona as a destination.

Bear in mind, however, that you may find it extremely hard to leave Barcelona once you get engrossed in the city.
